Asset tagging for construction and plant hire

Tags that survive a site — riveted to plant, scanning across yards, and tough enough to still be readable when the equipment comes back.

Construction assets have two properties that make them uniquely hard to track: they move constantly, and they disappear regularly. Scaffolding goes out to a site in Kiambu and comes back short. A compactor moves between three projects in a quarter and nobody is quite sure which cost centre it sits in. Tools walk.

The environment is equally hostile. Site plant lives in mud, dust, rain and vibration, and gets handled roughly by people who are not thinking about the asset register. Any tag that relies on adhesive to a clean flat surface is the wrong tag.

The right tag for a construction environment

Riveted aluminium tags are the primary specification. Site plant cannot be tagged with adhesive — the surfaces are rough, oily and vibrating, and the equipment gets pressure-washed. A mechanically riveted tag is the only one that survives a full plant life. We punch to your fastener size and supply rivets if you need them.

Acetone-activated aluminium for cleaner housings, control panels, site office equipment and surveying instruments. Rated -40°C to +120°C with 9+ years of outdoor life.

On-metal RFID for plant hire operations specifically. If you are checking equipment in and out of a yard daily, RFID lets a gate sweep read everything on a trailer without anyone climbing on it. That is where the technology pays for itself.

Tamper-evident tags for power tools and portable equipment, where the risk is the tag moving rather than the tag failing.

Stainless steel for equipment in sustained chemical or high-heat exposure.

When to do it

Tag in the yard, not on site. Bring equipment back for scheduled servicing and tag it then; trying to tag a working site is unsafe and the count will be incomplete.

For a plant hire business, tag at the point of acquisition and make it part of the intake process. Every item that enters the fleet gets a tag before it goes out on hire for the first time.

The operational angle

For construction firms the register drives cost allocation. Which project is a grader charged to this month, and for how many days? That question is unanswerable without individual identification, and it is exactly the question that determines whether a project is actually profitable.

For plant hire businesses the register drives utilisation and condition. Which items are earning, which are idle, which are overdue for service, and what condition did each come back in? The tag number is the key that links the hire contract, the service record and the asset.

Both also drive the thing nobody wants to discuss: loss. A tagged, verified fleet tells you what has gone missing and when, which is the first step to stopping it.
