Acetone-activated versus self-adhesive aluminium asset tags

Standard self-adhesive tags use a permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive that is ready to bond as soon as the backing is peeled off. It relies on firm, even pressure across the tag face and a clean, dry surface to reach full strength, and it suits the great majority of assets: desks, cabinets, laptops, monitors, most machinery housings.

Acetone-activated tags carry an adhesive that is reactivated with acetone applied just before the tag is pressed on. The solvent softens the adhesive layer so it flows into and grips fine surface texture more aggressively than a standard pressure-sensitive bond, which is why it holds better on surfaces that resist standard adhesive over time.

At the 39 × 13 mm anchor size, acetone-activated tags cost KSh 60 against KSh 50 for standard self-adhesive, a KSh 10 premium, or 20% more per tag. Above the anchor size the gap widens slightly because the per-cm² rate is also higher: KSh 9.50 against KSh 8.00. On a 5,000-tag order at anchor size that is a KSh 50,000 difference before VAT, so it is worth confirming you actually need the stronger bond before specifying it across an entire estate.

Self-adhesive tags can be applied by almost anyone with no special handling, clean the surface, peel, press firmly for a few seconds. Acetone-activated tags need a controlled application process: correct dosing of acetone, adequate ventilation, and a slightly more practised hand, which matters if you are training a large internal team to do the tagging themselves rather than using our on-site service.
